How Does Public Education Lead To The Social Reproduction Of Existing Class Divisions In Our Society?
how does public school funding mirror and reproduce the inequality of our society? what steps can be taken to ensure every kid a efficient education?
Even putting aside kids whose parents send them to private schools…kids who live in poor school disctricts live around poor people; these people make less money and, therefore, pay less taxes; their schools, in turn, have less tax revenue with which to buy books, pay teachers, etc. Rich school districts, on the other hand, have more tax revenue to buy books, pay teachers, fund extra-curricular programs, sports, etc. Then, think about it: the kids who graduate from the schools in poor communities and stay there will make less money and thus put less money back into the community. The kids who graduate from richer schools will get better jobs and put more money back into their communities. It becomes a vicious circle.
Rich kids get private education.
Everyone else gets public education.
Use your imagination to make connections about education and class division.
